The fact is that the local combat system requires great accuracy, because there are more than 150 types of enemies and they are all unique. However, that’s not even the point. The fact is that every touch deals damage. And as we remember, there are very few save points, so any failure turns into a 2-minute run with another clearing of the path between the place of death and save. Hollow Knight exhausts frankly surprises by jogging to where a noteworthy enemy was found.
The same system interferes with peaceful exploration. When the scope of the known expands, in search of previously inaccessible, and now opened (with a new skill) directions, you need to walk very far, literally across the entire map. The same is with the assortment of goods of merchants scattered throughout the dungeons: if you have saved up for something specific, you run the risk of forgetting who exactly you saw the desired little thing, go to the wrong place a couple of times.
The developers understood that an impressive bestiary and disguised nooks and crannies (their darkness) were only half the battle. That is why Hornet with a brave heart is forced to look for amulets that can extinguish the impact from the blow, increase the damage done, or please with some other effect. Reasonable combinations will help balance the fights with the “bosses”. The game was made with taste and scope, despite the apparent simplicity and the use of retro templates proven over the years. For some, it is a familiar and almost native play, gravitating “to the roots”, for others, who are familiar with the genre, it is an unexpectedly dynamic adventure.
However, the development of the second part came out in an absolute information vacuum, while it sold more than 2 million copies on steam. In general, we invite all fans of this genre to visit this moderately hardcore, but very interesting game.
